CranioSacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, powerful health care approach that acts through the nervous system and spine to assist in relieving pain and improving function in the whole body. One can experience a deep calm during a CranioSacral treatment.
The craniosacral system is the term used to describe the structures supporting the brain and spinal cord, specifically the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect these areas. Using a hands-on method of evaluation and treatment, the functioning of this body system can be gently influenced and improved. CST tends to complement and stimulate the body's natural healing processes.
The rhythmic movement of the cerebrospinal fluid is a key factor, guiding what is done during a treatment. Dubbed the craniosacral rhythm, it is an indicator of the mobility of the body's connective tissue, symmetry and vitality. It is used, in conjunction with other subtle techniques, to locate and identify dysfunctions and restrictions within the craniosacral, fascial and muscular-skeletal systems. By gently working with the spine and the skull and its cranial sutures, diaphragms, and fascia, the restrictions of nerve passages can be eased, the movement of cerebrospinal fluid through the spinal cord can be optimized, and misaligned bones can to be restored to their proper position.
With these techniques, there is usually a natural focus around the head and vertebral column, but treatments are by no means restricted to these areas. Factors that compromise posture and function of the cerebrospinal system can be present throughout the whole body.
CST techniques can enhance movement and coordination, pain pathways, the digestive system, the respiratory system, heart function, the endocrine system... potentially the majority of body systems.
CranioSacral Treatment is sought out for:
- Back pain & troubles
- Digestion problems especially in babies
- Headaches & Dizziness
- Hip & pelvic problems
- Jaw & mandibular problems
- Muscle & joint pain
- Neck & shoulder pain
- Recovery from operations
- Repetitive strain injuries
- Sleep problems
- Sports injuries
- Stress and anxiety
- Tiredness and fatigue
Children can receive CranioSacral treatments from birth. The technique is painless and presents no risk for children as well as feeble or elderly clients.
The CranioSacral Treatment
A craniosacral therapy session involves the therapist placing their hands on the patient, which allows a tuning into the craniosacral rhythm. A craniosacral therapy session is performed with the client fully clothed, normally while lying on their back. Each session with Dale lasts approximately 85 minutes including consultation time.
In the Upledger method of CranioSacral therapy, a ten-step protocol is often used to address most parts of the body to find restrictions. Based on findings, the practitioner may then use more time on areas involved in the restriction, gently guiding the area to relax and unwind.
Clients often feel a deep sense of quiet and relaxation during a CranioSacral treatment due to the calming effect it can have on the central nervous system.
